Godspeed

The rain drizzles down, blurring the neon sign of the local coffee shop through the windshield. My hands grip the steering wheel as I sit in my car and watch Jake and Robin pull up on their motorcycles, water splashing off their tires. The reluctance is palpable, like a heavy mist hanging over us. I take a deep breath, knowing that I need to be convincing if they’re going to help me.

“Hey, Waverly,” Jake greets, his voice muffled by the helmet as he removes it, revealing his short-cropped hair and strong jawline. Robin does the same, her red curls bouncing free. They’re both soaked to the bone, their jackets and jeans sticking uncomfortably to their skin.

“Thanks for coming,” I say, trying to sound more grateful than desperate. We all head into the coffee shop, shaking off the dampness and leaving small puddles in our wake.

“Cut to the chase, Waverly. What’s this about?” Robin asks as we slide into a booth next to the window. Their impatience is understandable, but it only adds to the weight bearing down on me.

“Madison’s death,” I reply, letting the words hang in the air. I see their eyes widen slightly, a flicker of interest creeping in. “I think Dent was involved, and I need your help to prove it.”

“Wait, what?!” Jake exclaims, disbelief etched on his face. His skepticism is not surprising, but I can’t let it deter me.

“Look, I’ve been tailing Dent for a while now. He’s been acting strange, meeting with some shady characters. And then Madison turns up dead,” I explain, my fingers tracing the edge of my coffee cup. “We owe it to her to find the truth. To get justice.”

“Justice...” Robin murmurs, her eyes distant as she contemplates the idea. “You really think Dent is involved?”

“Call it a gut feeling,” I reply, my voice low and serious. A decade of working as a private investigator has sharpened my instincts. “But we can’t just sit back and let this go unanswered. We need to do something.”

The rain continues to fall against the window, the pitter-patter of droplets serving as an unsettling backdrop to our conversation. The coffee shop’s warmth lulls me into a false sense of security, but I know that once we step out of here, we’ll be exposing ourselves to the cold, unforgiving world outside.

“Will you help me?” I ask, my hazel eyes pleading with them to see the importance of this mission.

The smell of damp wool fills the air as Jake scoffs, his hands wrapped tightly around his coffee mug for warmth. “Waverly, Dent is a high-ranking police officer with connections all over this town. And we’re just... us. What makes you think we stand any chance against him and his corrupt buddies?” His skepticism hangs heavy in the air, an unspoken challenge that I can’t ignore.

“Exactly,” I say, my voice steady despite the tension brewing in our little corner of the coffee shop. “We’re outsiders. We don’t have any ties to the corruption in this place, which means we can expose the truth without being compromised by it.
